Fall leaf

There is no shortage of things to do in the Black Hills area during the fall. Whether you’re chasing after the best views or prefer a more laidback experience, we have it all. One of the best ways to enjoy the Black Hills is by relaxing in one of our vacation homes with a private hot tub, or in one of our pet-friendly properties (yes, bring the pup!). Learn more about what makes the Black Hills a prime fall destination for your next family vacation!

Hiking Trails

If there’s one thing we recommend you do on your Black Hills vacation, it’s hiking! With 450 trails to be explore, you may have a tough time choosing which one to tackle, so here’s some of our recommended hikes in the Black Hills:

  • Sunday Gulch Trail: The Sunday Gulch Trail is one of the area’s most popular trails and rated as a strenuous hike. This 4-mile loop begins near Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park and takes you through a valley with boulders surrounding you. You’ll be rewarded with gorgeous views of the valley and stunning rock formations. Many rare plants and a wide variety of trees can be seen throughout the trail.
  • Elk Creek Trail: If you’re looking for an easier hiking trail in the Black Hills, Elk Creek Trail is a 5-mile out-and-back trail with many places to stop and take in the peace and quiet. Enjoy a leisurely stroll with the pups (remember to leave no trace!) and enjoy a day outdoors with family and friends. The trail follows a creek, and if you choose to go all the way to the end, you’ll be greeted by Dalton Lake.
  • Cathedral Spires: Head to Custer State Park and hike the family-friendly trail of Cathedral Spires. This 1.6 out-and-back trail offers a look at the unique rock formations of Custer State Park with views of Black Elk Peak, Cathedral Spires, and the Black Hills Forest.

Leaf Peeping

Take in the colors of fall with a drive along Route 14A as it takes you through Spearfish Canyon. It’s one of the most scenic roads in the Black Hills area during all seasons, but it’s even more of a treat during the fall when you get to drive through the vibrant red, yellow, and orange leaves. The leaves typically begin to change color starting in mid-September, however, you can view this report to get the most up-to-date information on when the colors are at their peak.
